Phillies payday for Howard a sign of the times
Some people call signing Ryan Howard to a 3 year $50 plus million dollar contract a great deal for both. That maybe so, I guess the going rate for ballplayers just keeps going up, up, and up. Not that he's not worth the money mind you.
It's not too long ago that Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose got contracts that called for 1 million dollars a year. That seemed like a lot of money back then, and it still is today. The fact is that these huge contracts do nothing to help the game itself. It gives people a reason to turn off the tv and watch something else. Overpaid superstars playing an overrated game. Or is it?
What is it about a $8 dollar beer at the ballpark or $11 just to park or $5 for a soda, make it more difficult for fans to even go to a couple games at the major league level? Could it be $50 tickets between 1st and 3rd base in the first level? Just a couple of years ago, 6 or 7 that is, it used to be in the range of $26 for the same level seat at Veteran's Stadium. Is it the price of moving to a new ballpark? The one that has fewer seats but is much more fan friendly? The Phillies won't lack for fans for the next few years with their World Series win behind them now, but I look at the game only 10 years ago when they didn't win all that much and I wonder how much things have changed in the game.
Just a sign of the times... Just a sign of the times
