Flyers win dramatic Game 7

The Philadelphia Flyers won a dramatic game 7 last night in Washington, DC. The game was tied going to the end of the game, and an overtime powerplay provided the team with the opportunity to win this exciting game. The Flyers made a great turnaround going from a team that couldn't contend a short time ago last season, to a team that now is advancing into the second round the the NHL's second season, the playoffs.

We'll be taping our weekly show tonight at 6:35pm so join us if you'd like to talk some philly sports with the mighty Jim 'Sports Dog' Mulry and Rich Baxter.

Phils going up against the upstart Astros tonight

The Fightin Phils are going up against the newly revived Houston Astros for the first game of a three game series starting tonight at Citizen's Bank Park. The Astros have been revitalized by none other than former Phils GM Ed Wade. I expected the Astros to come out like gunfighters and rise to the top or near the top of the Central Division in no time, they've had a bit of a rocky start as did most of the teams that were picked to do so well this year.

The Phils have been very much on a see saw for the first thirteen games, there's been greatness and not so great plays already. This is to be expected during the long season of baseball, hopefully in the end though there is much more greatness than the other way around. Here's the offensive leaders of the club so far:

BA: .359 Pat Burrell

Hits: 17 Chase Utley

HR's: 4 Pat Burrell

RBI's: 13 Pat Burrell

So far during the season the attendance figures at Citizen's Bank Park have been fairly good for the early part of the season the Phils are 5th out of 16 teams in the National League with 237,905 -

The new show is now available from Philly Sports Talk Now! and this show we speak with author, and associate professor of law from Villanova, Mitch Nathanson who has a Phillies book out called, "The Fall of the 1977 Phillies". We talk with Mitch and he tells us all about what inspired him to write the book.

The Phillies take on the Mets for game 2 of the series, can the Phillies lose to the Mets? They've won 9 straight from the rival NY Mets so far, can tonight be 10?

Both the Flyers and Sixers are in the playoffs, can they go deep into the playoffs?

If we can make it there, we'll make it anywhere... onto New York

The Phils split with the Reds with a win in the getaway game earlier this afternoon. I would have preferred to see the Phillies go to New York with a winning record. The Mets haven't been doing all that well either lately. The Braves just ruffed them up, but I suspect they are lying in wait for the Fightin's to get some revenge from last year.

Pat Burrell is showing leadership on the team. He is setting the pace for others to follow at this point. The Phillies star left fielder is starting to 'pay back' the Phillies for all those millions that he earns with games like these. Pat the Bat went 2-4 with two homeruns and 3 rbi's in this game. His average sits at .435 as he sweeps into a ballpark in New York where he is known to 'own' New York at.

Cole Hamels gets his first win of the year and evens up to 1-1 - his next spot will be pitching at home in front of his own fans this coming Saturday against the Cubs at Citizen's Bank Park. The bright spot is he era which is 1.20 . Believe it or not, that stat does not lead the MLB, Jake Peavy of the Padres has an incredible .56 era with 2 wins so far this year. Who says you can't find a decent pitcher out there?

Gordon got in an inning's work, and Lidge earned the save. Lidge made some fans squirm again, walking two though before the game ended with the Reds threatening in the bottom of the 9th. Again a win is a win, and we'll take it even though we got a little nervous near the end of the game.

So wrapping up the Phillies second series of the year, it's a split 2-2 for the series in Cinncy. Myers looked very shaky, Hamels looked great. Burrell leads the offense along with Chase so far early on in the season. Onto Series # 3 for the Phillies, a trip to New York to face the NL rival, NY Mets. I hope our pitching elder, Jamie Moyer bounces back from his very rough last start and has what it takes to get back on track.

Show 83 - Philly Sports Talk Now! talks with Cy Young Winner Mike Marshall

Show 83 brings a special guest, Dr. Mike Marshall. Mike came on the show to talk about pitching and his method of trying to help pitchers with not getting arm injuries. We talk about the great baseball of the 1970's as well. Mike talks about Cole Hamels and what he thinks about his pitching, and the comparison with the great Steve Carlton.

The Phillies open the second game of the series with the Washington Nationals, this time with Cole Hamels on the mound. The Phils also added to the bullpen, Rudy Seanez, a 16 year career pitcher who was with the Dodgers last year. Seanez was great last year, but I wonder why the Dodgers released him in Spring training? He's 39, just about the average age of a Philadelphia closer. Can't they find anyone young?

Listen to the show, and listen to the great Dr. Mike Marshall!

Our next show features former Cy Young winner Dr. Mike Marshall

Opening Day  for the Phillies was a bust, but don't throw in the towel just yet! There is 161 reasons to stay on board as a fan. We'll talk about the Phils Opener as well as many more Phillies notes.

Our next show features one of the greatest relief pitchers from the 1970's and early 1980's, Dr. Mike Marshall. He'll be joining us to talk about his method of pitching that he says will help eliminate pitchers having arm problems like they encounter today.

Here's a passage from Wikipedia on Dr. Marshall:

Marshall won the National League Cy Young Award in 1974 as a member of the Dodgers as well as being named the NL Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News. He was a member of the National League All Star Team in 1974 and 1975. Marshall was also named Fireman of the Year by TSN with three different teams: in the NL in 1973 with the Montreal Expos and 1974 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a third time in 1979 in the American League with the Minnesota Twins (sharing the award with Jim Kern).

Marshall led his league in games pitched four times, saves three times, and games finished five times. He is the major league record holder for most appearances (games pitched) in one season with 106 in 1974, 12 more than the next highest total.

Marshall attended Michigan State University, earning three degrees, including a Ph.D. in kinesiology.

Marshall teaches and advocates a pitching method he developed that he "believes could completely eradicate pitching-arm injuries" [1]
