Lidge in the fold, hopefully he shines

Mr Brad Lidge is in town with his brand new contract and his new team. I can see the headlines now though if he doesn't come through for the Phillies. Houston was very interested in dealing him, for good reason also. He saved 19 games in 27 opportunities that is a bit on the troubling side really. He's pitched only 65-70 innings in each of the last three seasons each year. He had 8 blown saves last season in Houston. On the bright side Lidge had 42 saves in 2005 to earn his way onto the All Star team that year.

So the 2008 season is still months away, and the Phils are still looking for more pitching. We will see what other moves come out of this, I think the Astros got the better of the deal. They got a starting center fielder who is fast, very much a raw talent still. A good reliever in Geary, and Mike Costanza who was supposed to be in the Phillies future plans but now that the Houston GM Ed Wade is calling some shots that isn't to be anymore. Wade even is interested in Lieber and I wouldn't doubt that he ends up an Astro.

Here's what Houston Astro sports writer Alyson Footer from MLB.com said in reference to the Lidge trade:

Look, we all know what Brad can do when he's on the top of his game. But clearly, his time had come and gone in Houston. It's been an unbelievably difficult two years for Lidge and for Astros fans. As I watched him pitch through 2007, I saw glimpses of that 97 mph fastball and that fabulous slider that put him on the map three years ago. And I'd often think, "He can still be a great closer." But as the season progressed, I asked myself, "Can you honestly envision him closing games for the Astros in October?" And as much as I wanted to believe he could, I just couldn't picture it actually happening that way. He needed to move on. He has one more year before he's a free agent, so even if the Astros kept him for '08, he'd surely be gone after the season.

Bonds faces the music on steriods rap....

Barry Bonds was finally served his papers for lying to a Federal Grand Jury in regards to his use of steroids today. We've been wondering when and if anything would be done in reference to this for the past year or so. Bonds broke Henry Aaron's record and currently sits atop all home run hitters in the MLB at 762 homeruns. Bonds may have played his last game as he is now facing legal problems as well as not having been picked up by any Major League team now that he is a free agent.

You can't take lying to a Federal Grand Jury too lightly, this makes all of Bonds accomplishments subject to be banned for life by the baseball gods as happened to Pete Rose. This ordeal will no doubt be dragging through the courts in the off season, and it will be interesting to see what happens next. Bonds was taunted unmercifully by fans all over baseball this past season, and now the law may have the final say in Barry's immediate future.

Shop the Alzheimer's Foundation eStore

At Philly Sports Talk Now! we like to share with the readers of our blog. This holiday season, it's important to remember all the people that are affected by Alzheimer's Disease. One way to support the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, they are an organization that is committed to providing optimal care and services to people who are confronting dementia, through it's member organizations and dedicating itself to improving the quality of life for that individual. This disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that strikes the brain's nerve cells, resulting in memory loss, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.

One way of supporting the Alzheimer's Foundation of America is through a gift of donation, or especially now that the holidays are upon us, simply shopping at their e-Store directly benefits the foundation. About 5 million Americans suffer from this disease and the foundation is an organization that is committed to finding answers and providing the quality services and care that the patients need.

holiday gift

Imagine a world where you suddenly lose all of your memory or part of it, enough to drastically affect your life. It's a daunting disease for the family of the patients, constant care and supervision is required, and often families affected by this disease don't know where to turn for help. As a person who is affected by this disease you become dependent on others more than ever, the American Alzheimers Foundation of America is there to assist patients and caregivers, and families with information about this dreaded disease.

Alzheimer's

This holiday season, remember others and care for people who are less fortunate than you. I know about this disease first hand, my mother had this disease for two years before she died, it was terrible to see that your mother doesn't even know who you are anymore, and loses all touch of the world she lived in prior to her passing. The disease starts off slowly but the clues start early on, and then it progresses to a point where you can't even care for yourself sometimes. The Alzheimer's Foundation is committed to finding answers for a cure, and current services for people who need to get in touch with the proper agencies to get help.

Eagles hang tough, and earn victory

The Philadelphia Eagles played tough into the second half and despite some plays that could have swung the game in the opposite direction for the birds, they came out on top in a must win for them.

The Eagles got on the board first with a Michael Westbrook 4 yard pass from Donovan McNabb in a drive that lasted 11 plays and saw the Eagles go 82 yards for their first score. The Redskins answered back with 2 TD passes to James Thrash, the really good ex-Eagle receiver, with the passes coming from Redskin quarterback Jason Campbell in the second quarter. A Redskins Field Goal from 23 yards out in the third quarter gave the Redskins a 15-7 lead and then LJ Smith caught his first TD pass of the year to keep the Eagles close. In the Fourth quarter the Redskins scored a touchdown and a field goal but the Eagles turned the offense on scoring three touchdowns in the final quarter. The Birds went for the two-point conversion a few times today, and missed it twice on a pass attempt both times.

So success for the Eagles today, who didn't get in trouble with the penalties this game only getting 5 penalties for 58 yards on the day. McNabb looked like a Pro Bowl candidate today with 4 td's and throwing for 251 yards. Brian Westbrook ran for 20 rushes and went 100 yards on the day. Westbrook had two receiving touchdowns and one rushing, so he finished with 3 TD's on the day which was a great perfomance. The Redskins took the loss at home at FedEx Field and they fall to third place in the NFC East and the Eagles hang tough still in the basement in the NFC East at 4-5.

Next week on Sunday they play the Miami Dolphins who haven't won a game all year yet. The 1 pm kickoff should see the Eagles at least an 8-10 point favorite in this one. The 0-9 Dolphins did lose heartbreakers the past two weeks, both of the scores were 13-10 and they lost those games to the Giants and the Bills. So, the Fins are still looking for the first win and the remain like a shark in the water looking for some blood. The Eagles should look past the Fins terrible record and know that this team is out for a win at any cost. Look for the Eagles to win here though if all of their success from the Redskin game follows back to Lincoln Financial Field for the 1 pm kickoff against the Dolphins.

Eagles flop against the Cowboys

Eagles playoff hopes dim, as they lose to the Cowboys in convincing style ...

I can't say that I didn't see this coming. On last week's show, I predicted a big Eagles loss against the Cowboys. The inconsistent play week after week tipped me off to this possibility. Of course when the game is played anything can happen. The Eagles played a lackluster style that has spelled loss for them again but this time against their arch rivals the Dallas Cowboys.

The Eagles secondary is not up to the challenge it seems. They have been giving up wide open catches and anything under 15 yards too much this year. The offense at times looked pretty good, but other times looks like it can't get going. Costly turnovers and sloppy play turn into losses.

The Eagles season is all but over as far as the playoffs will go, so it's time to turn our sights to next year.
