Show 63 - Philly Sports Talk Now! (Oct 31 2007)
Rally Monday
The memories will last a long time. Here's a picture I took on the last Sunday game of the season long after the game was over a 'wet' Harry Kalas sings to us and tells us about the rally for the Phillies.
Tune into the next show taping tonight on Halloween to hear James 'Jimmy Dogg' Mulry and Rich Baxter talk about the upcoming invasion by the Cowboys. Rich says it ain't going to be easy. We'll look at who the Phillies should add to the team via the free agency sweepstakes.

Should the Phils consider A-Rod?

The Phillies may be looking for a third baseman this winter, should the search include the newly available Alex Rodriguez who freed himself from the Yankees?
I could imagine the scene now, A-Rod popping them over the short porch at Citizen's Bank Park, 75 homeruns in the season for a new record and over 200 rbi's as the Phillies cruise to the NL East pennant. This would come at a cost though, a bigger cost then I think the Phillies will be wanting to pay.
Let's look at Rodriguez's numbers over the past few years. He's been healthy enough to play 95 percent of the games over the last seven years. He's been on the top of his game for his whole career. He is destined to be in the Hall of Fame. The past three years he has hit 54, 35, and 48 homeruns. He'll be 32 years old in 2008- he may still have the prime of his career remaining, he is a 14 year veteran and will be starting his 15th season in 2008. He's been the AL MVP in 2003 and 2005 and in 2002 he was MLB baseball's player of the year. He had an average salary of 22 million dollars a year over the last seven years. His stats at this age are compared to Mickey Mantle, Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey according to Baseball Reference.
The Phillies may have some room if they can deal Pat Burrell, which is a move I don't support. I think Pat was a big reason the Phillies were as good as they were last year. He should be a Philly in '08 as well. He is a big time player and maybe a bargain as the prices of salaries are escalating as they are. Phillies GM Pat Gillick knows Alex Rodriguez. He was the GM of the Mariners in the late 90's. That may be a good reason the Phils should go after A-Rod. I have a simple plan, the Phillies will draw 3 million plus next year, add an extra dollar to each beer sold at the stadium to pay some of his salary.
Should the Phillies go after A-Rod, yes! Would Rodriguez want to play in Philly? He should, this team has a potential to win it all real soon and he would be a part of it.

Who determines the NL and AL MVP ?
The answer to the question of who determines the NL and AL MVP or Major League Baseball is the BBWAA, or the Baseball Writers Association of America. They are a group of writers from around the country who belong to this association who have been a member of the association for 10 years or more.
The BBWAA also vote for the induction of players into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In the days of pre-Internet these writers were the keepers of the key to MLB Baseball as they covered the season by writing columns in newspapers, and magazines covering baseball players every move on the field. They are the experts in the field. Lately, they've been challenged by emerging media companies on the internet and elsewhere. Online writers aren't eligible yet to participate in the voting of these treasured awards that we look forward to hearing about every year.
Local Philadelphia sports writers Bill Conlin, Jim Salisbury, and Paul Hagen are all part of the BBWAA who take part in the voting process to make these coveted awards. The BBWAA has some strict rules of it's own though, and a violation can find you out of the organization real fast. If a member of the association solicts an autograph from a player while working, he will be in deep trouble with not only the MLB team who discovers this infraction, he will also lose his membership in the BBWWA as well.
The organization faces criticism for some of it's decisions from time to time. That is to be expected in a world where nothing is simply black and white, there are a lot of gray areas to be considered. So this year whoever is picked to be the MVP in the NL and AL, you'll know that the decision was a vote by the writers that bring us the descriptions of the game. When a team is winning it's so great to read their columns, when a team is losing though, watch out the scathing words that scorch men's souls are let loose and it's all in a days work for the writer. The Baseball Writer of America......

Who will win NL MVP? Here's a mock vote
Here's a mock vote of the winner for the NL MVP that I got off of BaseballReference.com - You can see what I think is the inevitable pick, Holliday walks off with the MVP. Jimmy was awesome for the Phillies, but I think this one goes to the newest NL phenom in a long while, Matt Holliday.

Free Agents that could become a Phillie?
The recent reports of the Phillies being interested in players who will be or are free agents is intriguing. Some names that are brought to the forefront are Schilling, Lowell, or even A-Rod. Would any of these players fit in with the Phillies of 2008?
The Phillies do need one or more pitchers who they can count on to win 15 or more games for them for 2008. Schilling is a veteran pitcher who gives his all. Can he be one of them? Probably not, his asking price will be too high for the Phillies to go out on a limb for in my opinion. They do need to acquire a couple of good pitchers though. The difference between making the playoffs and not making them rests in this decision. The Phillies got awfully lucky by just winning the division this past season, it would be nice to have them with a comfortable lead going into the playoffs and win the division next year with ease.
Former Philly Carlos Silva will be a free agent. Could he make a return to Philly pinstripes? Scott Linebrink as well will be a choice for some team out there looking to fill their rotation for relief. Mariano Rivera will not be with another team I think, he'll stay a Yankee and retire with them. Bartolo Colon may be looking for a new home, he didn't do so well last year as he went 6-8 with a high 6.34 era, he may be damaged goods. There is a guy named Zambrano out there if the deal is right and a guy named Smoltz. Any player may be interested in the gutsy Phillies with their good chances to make the post season in 2008.
Come on Pat Gillick, go out a winner and make a couple great deals for us! We were supposed to be in the playoffs this year according to you, but next season is looking up!

Rockies blank the Diamondbacks and go to World Series
The Diamondbacks now know how the Phillies feel. The Rockies steamrolled them in 4 straight and advance to the World Series for the first time since they came into the league in 1993.
Play that inspired great team baseball was the norm here again with the Colorado Rockies who played very unselfish baseball. Matt Holliday was the series MVP, and may get the National League MVP behind the greatness that he brought to the Rockies this year.
Our next show is on Wednesday night with James Jimmy 'Sports Dogg' Mulry and Rich Baxter who will review what has been going on in the playoffs and more. Be sure to tune in then for the show.

Phils Bow Out in Game 3
The Rockies momentum continued on Saturday night in a game I really thought the Phillies were going to win. The game was tied 1-1 with a Shane Victorino homerun to tie it up and I thought that the Phillies floodgates would open with a little offense but it was no where to be found. The majestic steamroller offense that the Phillies displayed during the season was in fact completely out of gas.
Aaron Rowand said it best, "We just didn't hit." His quote sums up the series very well and there is basically nothing more to add to it. The Phillies gave the season a great ride with the division winning drive that they produced. I thought maybe the celebration went on too long after the Phils clinched the NL East but then again, the Phillies weren't even supposed to clinch the division at all so the euphoria that was expelled during the celebration may have taken the offense 'edge' with it.
All in all, I think it was a great season for the Phillies. They played their hearts out and won the title in the NL East from the Mets. What if we were Mets fans they are probably still in shock over what happened to their team. The Phillies made 2007 a very memorable year, yes it would have been nice to see them in the NLCS, but that isn't going to happen and we'll have to wait till next season to see how they'll do again.

Phils fans get a break from the series today

No game today. Nothing for the fans to gather around the radio or tv at work or home or at Citizen's Bank Park for that matter. The show has moved on to Denver and on Saturday the series continues on. The Phils have hosted their first two playoff games at home in their new home at Citizen's Bank Park. Over 3.1 million fans were at the stadium this year to see the team play.
A lot of interesting questions now arise that the season may be near an end for the Phil's season. Will Manuel be hired back on with the team? Ryan Howard will see a big contract this off season. How much will it be? Is 199 strikeouts acceptable from Howard, even though he batted in 136 rbi's and 47 homeruns? Who won't be a Phillie next year? Burrell had a great season for the Phils this year, is he a lifetime Phillie?
So many questions that time itself will handle. In just 24 hours the next playoff game will be played with the Rockies, we need a win - so break out the rally towels at home and let's go Phils!

Phillies need a piece of the Rock

Two games in the hole in a five game series is not good. The Phillies must pull another miracle and win 3 in a row now to take the series and advance into the NLCS. The Rockies are still surging and the Phils have cooled off a bit. A lot has been said about Charlie Manuel's taking Kendrick out of game when he did. If the Phillies got out of the inning then he appears to be an Abner Doubleday and gets the credit for being a genius. The Phillies are just playing a team at this point that is red hot, hopefully the Phils can make a series of this and force a game 5. They have to go into the next game with a great mind set.
The Rockies can lose ballgames, they got swept themselves a couple times during the season. Toronto swept them up in Toronto, and the Cubs swept them in Chicago. The Washington Nationals swept them for 4 games straight this season in Washington. The Phillies need to do that now, just a three game sweep or else the season ends.

Show 60 - Philly Sports Talk Now! (Oct 3 2007)
The Phillies are in the playoffs, they took a tough loss today in Game 1 but I think this series goes the distance as does Jim 'Sports Dogg' Mulry. It was an amazing accomplishment to be in the playoffs and getting there was a wild ride. Game 2 should be theirs or else it will be big trouble. The Eagles have the week off, that's a good thing. All this and more on Show 60 of talking Philadelphia sports.

Whatever it takes, Phils need to win Game 2
The Phillies were either in awe of being in the playoffs today, or extremely nervous at being in the playoffs for the first time in 13 + years. It was probably a combination of both. The team looked like a deflated balloon after their big win on Sunday to take the NL East. Their work isn't done yet, and now they must answer the Rockies with a win on Thursday or face an early elimination from the playoffs.
Cole Hamels got roughed up a bit, and the offense except for Rowand and Burrell's homeruns looked like a bunch of guys facing a tough pitcher and them striking out and not being able to hit him. They only got outscored by a score of 4-2 but that is the first game in the history books. Game 2 must be an all of nothing approach.
I may be the only person who didn't like to see Adam Eaton being left off the roster in this series. I think Tom Gordon is finished, he's given up big hits so many times down the stretch and he is totally unreliable. It is almost like he is serving up batting practice sometimes. This is Gordon's 20th season and hopefully his last in a Phillies uniform. I would have went with Eaton over Gordon even for a bullpen roll.
Hear all about our take on the game 1 action and what we think happens next on the Show 60 edition of Philly Sports Talk Now!

In Game report: Game 1 -= Phils vs. Rockies -=
In game report 1st game:
The Phillies are in the top of the 2nd and going somewhere they shouldn't have gone. This is a 3 run hole with the bases loaded and Matt Holliday up to bat. The ball is flying off the Rockies bats with ease.
The Phillies need to contain the hot Rockies and get back into this game and have the game live up to the hype of a rockem-sockem back and forth offensive game.
