Tears of Joy, The Phillies are in the playoffs!

The Rally Towel by R. Baxter

What a ballgame! Just got back from Citizen's Bank Park. Yes, me and my Mrs. we were just a couple of the many who stayed an hour and a half after the game. Talk about a celebration. Fans cried their eyes out with the final pitch that put the Phillies into the playoffs.. They jumped for joy like little kids, they ran around the stadium uncontrollably screaming and shouting for joy. This was one of the best games that I've ever been to. Fans were clapping at just about every pitch. They cheered Jamie Moyer and gave him a standing ovation when he entered the field to go out and warm up 40 minutes before the game started.

Fans waved their rally towels when they saw the Mets score prior to the start of the Phillies game. There was excitement filling the air at every possible moment. The Mets were getting beat up before the Phillies game even started. Even still, the Phillies had their own work cut out for them and had to win this ballgame today to win the division assuming the Mets would go on and lose their game.

What a feeling, what a day. I wore a throwback Richie Asburn jersey #1 to the game today, I was stopped by several fans and told what a nice jersey, and yes it is. One, as in one more game, one more victory and the chance to become Number 1. The Phillies did just that, in a matter of two weeks what started out looking like they may not make the playoffs at all, turned into the sweetest of victories, the greatest of wins, and the thrill of winning the NL East on the last day of the season.

This surge by the Phillies will be remembered by their fans, the players on the field and anyone who had an interest in baseball and watched the duel that played out between the NY Mets and the Phillies. Jimmy Rollins said in the beginning of the year that they were the team to beat. He was a little wrong the Mets were the team to beat most of the year, but the Phillies became the team that in the end no one else would beat them as they pulled out a miracle at Citizen's Bank Park and took the NL East on September 30, 2007 !!!

This is September 28th and the Phillies are in sole position of first place, here is the back page of the New York Newsday Newspaper! This is one of the greatest comebacks for the Phillies who haven't won it yet, but the worst fall from first place with a team like the Mets possibly not making the playoffs.... Unbelievable!

Phils teeter on the edge for wild card now

Join us tonight on the next Philly Sports Talk Now! - we will discuss the Phillies and their tightrope walk towards the wild card. Now with the losses against Colorado, they have put their backs up against a wall.

Now they're tied for second place with other teams from the NL West - LA, Colorado, and San Diego. Arizona is running away with the western division and now it's between the Phils and the rest of the west to fight it out. The good thing is that the Rockies play in their own division in the last few series remaining.

Do the Phillies still have what it takes to make it to the playoffs? I don't know, in the last two games the Phillies haven't shown that they will. The Phillies play inspired one series and just the opposite the next. Charlie Manuel needs to learn that he needs to walk hitters in certain situations. With 2 men on base and Matt Holliday up to bat, Manuel should have walked Holliday and hoped for the double play. That's the difference between managing a club and not.

Only a few more series to go and we will see if the Phillies will make the playoffs.

The rise and fall of the Phillies 2007

If any team can have such a high one week and then a low the next week to equal that high it has to be the Phillies. They sweep the Mets then they limp along and into today's game up 8-2 in the 8th inning, I just watched it again on the night replay of the game that signaled the rise and the fall of the 2007 Phillies. This game is exactly what the Phillies problem has been all season. No bullpen to rely on. Tom Gordon should never ever again pitch for the Phillies and Brett Myers is a victim of the 'Mitch Williams' syndrome.

We taped a segment of Philly Sports Talk Now tonight, but the baseball gods must have been angry at the way Jim 'Sports Dogg' Mulry bit at the team with a ferocious mauling of them. I had equipment problems as it was just as well for tonight's taping to be cancelled. Jim couldn't believe the game that he had just seen, he was livid. I was livid too, and I suspect all Phillies fans saw this game as the beginning to the end of this season. I hoped to be upbeat after today, I counted this game well before I should have. No lead is safe with this 2007 Phillies team. They could be up 20-0 and still end up losing, and I really mean that. Today has been an ugly loss, and the end to a bad roadtrip.

The Phillies lead the NL in a lot of offense catagories, and the pitching trolls near the bottom in nearly every catagory. It's a shame for the fans who expected more from the Phils, and Pat Gillick should be let go for not doing something more for this team when it desperately needed pitching and the bad moves he's made over the past year and more.
