Phils sweep Bucs, and into 2nd place

The Phillies swept the Bucs for a decisive third game on Sunday despite early heavy rain falls that looked as though the game may not get underway at all. The skies opened up and then later the Phillies bats opened up as the offense behind the great pitching from Kyle Kendrick provided the Phils the extra uumph to win the game and the series sweep on Sunday.

I have a Sunday season plan but upon leaving my home in Southern New Jersey the skies looked extremely dark and the weather warnings of severe thunderstorms was enough to turn us around and watch the game from home if it indeed went on. The opening pitch was only delayed 15 minutes so that wasn't too bad, I can remember trying to wait out a rain delay for more than an hour a couple of times so I wanted no part in that.

Chase Utley's injury seems like a minor setback for the team at this point in time, the Phillies have answered a call to 'step up' and get the job done from other players on the team. J Roll was again great on Sunday, and I hope his preseason prediction of reaching the playoffs is reached as he is playing greatly. If Chris Coste doesn't make the team next year, I'll give up my season seats! What does a guy have to do to prove himself? Coste was delivered many times for the Phillies and it should be plain to see that he deserves a back up catcher's roll on this team.

I am reading Mike Schmidt's new book, "Clearing The Bases" and I highly recommend the book for us Phillies fans. Our next show will be this coming week after we took last week off so talk to you then on our podcast.

10,000 losses later, we're still fans!

We had the honor of attending the 10,000th loss game!

It occurred to me after Friday night’s game that I had a chance to be present at what didn’t seem to be that big of an achievement. I have a Sunday plan that gives us an opportunity to get out to the ballpark at least 14 games a year with the Sunday game package. Saturday night’s big win over the Cardinals was my signal that we could indeed be in attendance for the game that everyone has been talking about this first half of the year of Phillies baseball. It could have been a sweep of the Cards or it would go into the record book as the big loss that the stats people have been keeping since 1883.

The Phillies looked really deflated after their two monster wins of the Cards. I knew after the third inning that this was going to be the night. Adam Eaton would find his name etched in Philly history if he made it far enough into the game before he would be pulled out. He didn’t disappoint, I am not really a big fan of pace of which Eaton pitches. He takes forever to pitch on the mound, and between pitches he wonders off the mound and generally doesn’t have a good command of the proper cadence of a game. I knew this before this game, but seeing him pitch this game solidified my opinion of this. The fielders get itchy out there standing around for so long, and it just seems like he goes off onto his own slow pace which hasn’t been all that successful this season, despite he has 8 wins. A lot of those games has just been the offense going out and outscoring the 5.69 runs a game that Eaton has been giving up.

I got home after the game and reviewed the ESPN game coverage of the game that was the featured game on Sunday Night Baseball. Announcers Joe Morgan and John Miller discussed the 10,000 loss mark and what it means if anything. They even brought ex-Phillie John Kruk into the discussion and they all agreed that Phillies fans like players that give it a full effort. I agree with that, but it goes further than that. A lot of great players have been booed by fans, maybe it’s just a way for the fan to take out their own frustrations with the team, I am not sure. Morgan said that the Philly fans like a great effort from their players and he tried to give that to them despite it being late in his career.

The ESPN coverage started out right from the opening of the broadcast though, they put up numbers of losing seasons, and number of times the team finished in last place, and so on. That coverage was unfair, it really looked like some sort of smear campaign for a minute or two. That’s the difference between having fun with a number like this and making a team look like a bunch of losers.

We left after the seventh inning stretch, I started thinking about how many Phillies games I’ve been to. I remembered Mike Schmidt’s winning walk off homers, Greg Luzinski’s blasts into the seats in Veteran’s Stadium, Steve Carlton’s magnificent strikeouts and other memories that I have. So thanks for the 1,000,000 memories that I have, I never even noticed the team had 10,000 losses and now that the record has been passed I am glad that it will never come up again probably. Thanks for the memories Philadelphia Phillies, me and my Mrs. are still Phillies fans!

2 wins in a row but 10,000 still looms

The 2007 Philadelphia Phillies are sailing along nicely after the all-star break winning two games in a row in convincing fashion against the St. Louis Cardinals. This team looks like the break really gave some of the players a chance to get some rest and relaxation during the 4 day break they enjoyed. The team has one more hurdle or distraction to go through though.

The milestone of 10,000 losses would be the distraction. This team isn't responsible for it, nor did they come close to losing that many games but still it makes a good headline, and people are having some fun with it. Since the team first started in 1883 stats have been kept and it looks like this stat stands out the most at this point. Here are some interesting points to ponder though as the game changed throughout the years: (courtesy of the 1983 Phillies yearbook, the 100th anniversary of the Phils)

In 1883:
1. A batter was not awarded first base if he was hit by a pitch
2. No games were allowed to be played on Sundays
3. Catchers often stood 20 or more feet behind the batter and caught the ball on a bounce
4. Players did not wear uniform numbers
5. Home plate was a 12 inch square ( instead of the present day five sided 17 inch wide plate
6. Ballparks were made of wood and there were no outfield fences
7. There were no dugouts, players sat on benches along the side
8. A pitcher got credit for a strike even when his pitch bounced before passing through the strike zone
9. Beer was not permitted to be sold at the ballpark (now it's $6.50 a beer all you want!)
10. Batting helmets were not worn
11. Gloves were made of thin leather and did not cover the fingers

So over the years the game evolved, yes the first few seasons of the new "Phillies" franchise was not close to being successful, and they have only one World Series championship in their history. This Phillies team shouldn't be shown in a negative light for this milestone of losses, in fact it is a tribute to how long the Philadelphia Phillies have been an organized professional baseball team. To me, the recent milestone of 10 Million fans already filed in to see a baseball game at Citizen's Bank Park is a better milestone. Citizen's Bank Park only opened in 2004 and here just three and a half seasons later baseball in Philadelphia by the Phillies have drawn that many people.

Show 48 - Philly SportsTalk Now! (Jul 5 2007)

On today's podcast, we talk about the horrible call that happened to the Phillies the other night and should the MLB use instant replay. We also give our report card grade to the Phillies for the first half of the season. Ryan Howard is invited to the Homerun hitting contest but doesn't jump at the chance to go, we ask why? We also look around the league at the surprises and who we think will be in the playoffs.

Happy 4th of July!

It's the fourth of July and we will be doing on next podcast on Thursday night, July 5th. The Phillies have been having a tough time down in Houston, but the good news is the Mets and the Braves also lost last night so the Phils didn't lose any ground.

On the next show, we will look back at the stats of the first half of the season for the Phillies. Jim Dogg will give us his analysis of how he feels the Phillies have performed so far. I will add into the mix a lot of stats and comparisons with the Fightins as well. We'll also look at what the Flyers have been up to in the off season.

So tune into our next show. We will try to broadcast the show again via Stickam live as we tape it. The camera will on be on Rich though you'll be able to hear the show as we do it, believe it or not, Jim doesn't even own a computer! He plans to change that soon, but Jim's real computer is inside his head as he is a walking plethora of information! We had some technical difficulties the first time we tried to use Stickam but we'll give it another go this week. Tune in around 7:15 pm on Thursday and see what the show is up to. As usual, we will be editing our show and presenting it as always on our blog for listening or downloading the mp3 file for yourself, or you can go it iTunes and subscribe to our show so you don't miss a show that we do!

Happy 4th of July everyone!
